Consume. Dispose. Re-Consume, 2019
A comment on society
This work at its base is a commentary on our wasteful consumerist tendencies we have developed as society has progressed. The pills are filled with “trash” and other discarded items; they are packaged to be resold to continue their cycle of consumed, disposed and re-consumed.
Popular media is constantly depicting new products and the consumption of these new products. These ads encourage people to stay on trend forcing society to discard what is considered to be “old” and “unwanted”. Once a consumer discards an item they see the new version of it or an altogether new item and that new thing is then purchased. The cycle is endless: We eat food, we shit food and we re-consume food; We buy clothes, we donate clothes and then rebuy new clothing; We buy an electronic, we throw out the electronic and then we buy a new electronic; We drink a water bottle, we recycle the water bottle and we buy another water bottle, etc. The project itself showcases the waste and, more specifically, examples of what we waste; some of the materials in the pills could be reused or recycled but we can also see a bottle filled with actual non-reusable trash.
